Perfume box types: which structure, and when?
The same bottle reads as an everyday shelf product in a folding carton and as a gift in a rigid magnetic box. The box type decides budget, storage, shipping risk and the unboxing moment all at once. This page compares the five structures most used for perfume and explains what each one changes in the dieline and the print file. How to measure the box and what goes on each panel is covered in the perfume box design guide.
What types of perfume boxes are there?
The most common perfume structures are the folding carton (tuck-end), the rigid lid-and-base box, the rigid box with a magnetic lid, the drawer (slide) box and the tube. Folding cartons are light and economical; rigid structures are used for gifting and a premium feel. The choice depends on budget, quantity, shipping and brand positioning.
Summary table

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Folding carton (tuck-end) | Shelf, everyday, travel size | Low | Yes | Board insert |
| Rigid lid-and-base | Gift, premium | High | Usually no | Board, EVA, foam |
| Magnetic lid (rigid) | Premium, collection | High | Usually no; collapsible models exist | EVA, foam, board |
| Drawer (sleeve + tray) | Gift, set | Medium–high | Depends on model | Cavity in the tray |
| Tube | Limited edition, niche brand | Medium–high | No | Support inside the tube |

Cost directions are relative; quoting figures would mislead. Your printer gives the real price, minimum quantity and lead time based on material, finishes and quantity. Inserts (board, EVA, foam) are not drawn in Grapxo; your printer or box maker cuts them.
Folding carton (tuck-end) perfume box
A tuck-end box is cut from a single sheet of board, folded, and closed with tuck flaps at each end. It ships flat, takes little storage space and uses a simple cutting die. It suits shelf products and travel sizes. Heavy bottles may need an insert or thicker board; dimensions are always taken from the bottle.
Most perfume brands launch with this structure, because surface graphics and finishes such as foil, embossing and spot UV work on folding cartons too. Board weight changes how the box feels in the hand; see Cosmetic box board weight to choose.
Straight tuck vs reverse tuck
On a straight tuck end, the top and bottom closure flaps hinge from the same panel and close in the same direction. On a reverse tuck end they hinge from opposite panels and close in opposite directions. The difference changes how front-panel artwork carries onto the lid flap and where the glue flap sits. Reading a tuck-end dieline walks through the layout step by step.
When a window makes sense
A window box works when you want to show the colour of the bottle or the cap. A window reduces the copy a panel can carry and can weaken the box, so plan the space left for mandatory information from the start. The window is a separate cut line on the dieline; the film and its size are set by the printer.
Rigid and magnetic-lid boxes
A rigid box is made by wrapping greyboard with a printed paper; it comes as a lid-and-base box or with a magnetic lid. It is chosen for gift sets and premium positioning. It is heavier than a folding carton, usually arrives assembled and needs a separate layout for the wrap paper. Ask your printer for cost and lead time.
A magnetic box is a kind of rigid box: the lid is a flap attached to the body and closes with magnets set into the board. The opening feels substantial, which is why it is common for collections and sets. Some manufacturers also offer collapsible rigid boxes that ship flat and are assembled by hand; ask whether your printer makes them.
Why the wrap is a separate file
On a rigid box the artwork is not printed on the greyboard; it is printed on a separate sheet and wrapped around the body. That wrap layout accounts for board thickness and the turn-in allowance folded over the edges. A folding-carton dieline therefore cannot be reused for a rigid box; the wrap needs a new layout from the printer’s dimensions. Hot foil, emboss and spot UV explains how finishes behave on wrapped boxes.
Rigid boxes in Grapxo: base and lid yes, wrap layout no
Grapxo’s vector engine draws the base and lid nets for a rigid gift box; it does not yet produce the wrap-paper layout. Your printer supplies the wrap size and turn-in allowance; you prepare the surface artwork in Grapxo and finish the wrap with the printer. On a magnetic box the magnet slots are not drawn either; magnet position and greyboard thickness are settled with the printer.
Drawer and tube perfume boxes
A drawer box is a tray that slides inside a sleeve and creates an opening ritual. A tube box echoes the bottle’s silhouette with a round form. Both may need custom tooling and handwork, so do not choose them before quantity and budget are clear. Sleeve and tray are sized separately; the gap between them decides how the drawer slides.
Drawer: sizing sleeve and tray
The sleeve is designed like any packaging sleeve: front and back panels carry the artwork, the ends stay open. The tray holds the bottle and the insert. Too tight and the tray will not slide; too loose and it falls out on its own. Tune this allowance with a printer’s sample. How sleeve, box and label come together in one system is covered in Packaging sleeve, box and label.
Tube: body, lid and base
On a tube box the body unrolls as a flat strip wrapped around the tube; lid and base are separate parts. Each part is sized on its own, and you plan up front where the body artwork meets at the seam. The logo or product name should not fall on the seam.
Which perfume box type should I choose?
For a first launch and shelf sales, a folding carton is enough for most brands. For gifts, collections or high-priced products, consider a rigid or magnetic box. If you sell mostly online, plan outer protection separately. Decide with a sample box and a printer’s quote; the wrong type usually shows up on the shelf or in transit.
Decision tree
- Low quantity, tight budget? Folding carton, with a board insert if needed.
- Sold as a gift or set? Rigid lid-and-base, magnetic or drawer box.
- Most sales shipped by courier? Whatever the type, plan outer protection; see Shipper vs unboxing box.
- Is a sleeve enough on the shelf? That decision has its own page: Perfume sleeve vs outer box.
- Not sure? Test with a short sample run first: Sample box brief.
Grapxo, Canva and Pacdora for perfume box types
Pacdora’s large dieline template library makes it easy to try different box types; Canva is quick for surfaces and presentation visuals. In Grapxo, tuck-end and reverse tuck boxes, lid-and-base, drawer boxes and sleeves are produced from the brief as print-ready vectors; for a rigid box only base and lid are drawn, and for a tube box the engine gives the tube print surface only. Whichever tool you use, confirm early that your printer can actually make the structure you picked.

If you have picked a box type, open a project in the studio, write the bottle size and the type into the brief, and let the engine lay out the surface on the dieline. To design one, go to perfume box design. Questions: info@grapxo.com
Frequently asked questions
What is the most economical perfume box?
Usually the folding carton (tuck-end) box; it ships flat and its cutting die is simple. Get a printer’s quote for an exact comparison.
Is a magnetic box the same as a rigid box?
A magnetic box is one kind of rigid box, with a lid that closes on magnets. Rigid boxes also come in other forms, such as lid-and-base.
Can a rigid box ship flat?
A classic rigid box usually arrives assembled; collapsible rigid models exist. Ask your printer.
What does a tube box dieline look like?
The body is a wrap layout; lid and base are separate parts. Each part is sized on its own.
Does a window weaken a perfume box?
A window removes board from the panel; set its size and position together with your printer.
Which box types does Grapxo produce?
For perfume: tuck-end and reverse tuck, lid-and-base, drawer, shoulder and hinged-lid boxes, pillow boxes and sleeves; also auto-bottom and lock-bottom boxes, mailers, corrugated shippers, polygon boxes and trays. Rigid boxes get base and lid nets; the wrap is prepared with your printer. Magnet-slot boxes are not available today.
