Honey jar label: what goes on it and how to design it

A honey jar label does a lot on a small surface: it makes the honey type and brand readable on the shelf, carries the wording the Communiqué requires and builds trust. For beekeepers, cooperatives and regional food sellers, this guide first covers honey-specific label wording in Turkey, then jar size, design hierarchy and the gift box. It links to the relevant page for general food labelling rules.

What information is mandatory on a honey label?

A honey label carries general food label information (name, net quantity, best-before date, storage conditions, operator details, registration and batch numbers) plus the wording required by Turkey’s Honey Communiqué. Under the Communiqué the label must state "1 yaşından küçük bebeklere bal yedirilmemelidir" (do not feed honey to infants under one year). Check the current text.

General food fields

The list of mandatory particulars is in Article 9 of the Food Labelling and Consumer Information Regulation; the legibility rule (x-height of at least 1.2 mm, or 0.9 mm where the largest surface is under 80 cm²) and the requirement to show the name of the food and net quantity in the same field of vision are in Article 16. For layout see Food label mandatory info fields. Whether honey needs a nutrition declaration must be checked in the regulation’s exemptions annex.

Honey-specific wording

Article 13 of the Turkish Food Codex Honey Communiqué (No. 2020/7) adds the following to the general rules:

  • The label states "1 yaşından küçük bebeklere bal yedirilmemelidir" (do not feed honey to infants under one year).
  • By source, honey is named "bal" (honey), "salgı balı" (honeydew honey) or "çiçek balı" (blossom honey); honeydew honey from pine is named "çam balı" (pine honey).
  • Honey with a defined botanical source that clearly shows that source’s characteristics may add the plant name, such as sunflower or linden honey (not for filtered or baker’s honey).
  • A regional name may be used if the honey clearly shows the characteristics of that region’s flora and it does not conflict with geographical indication rights (not for filtered or baker’s honey).
  • For honey in frames, the frame weight is not included in the net quantity.
  • Filtered and baker’s honey are named "filtre edilmiş bal" and "fırıncılık balı"; baker’s honey carries "sadece pişirme amaçlı" (for cooking only) near the name; filtered honey states that its pollen content has been reduced.
  • The names "krem bal" (creamed honey) and "kristalize bal" (crystallised honey), and the definition of "ham bal" (raw honey), depend on conditions set in the Communiqué.

These lines summarise the Communiqué; always copy label wording verbatim from the official text.

Regulatory note

The Communiqué was published in the Official Gazette on 22.04.2020 and entered into force on publication; check the current consolidated text for later amendments. Analysis values, health claims and words such as "natural" or "healing" fall under separate rules; this page does not suggest them. Export markets have their own rules. This section is for information only and is not legal advice.

How do you measure a honey jar label?

Measure the flat or cylindrical area where the label will sit. On a round jar, take circumference and overlap for a wrap label; on a square jar, measure front and back panels separately. A lid label or tamper seal is a separate part. Take dimensions from the supplier’s drawing and check the first proof on a real jar.

Round and square jars

On a round jar, label height is taken from the flat zone between the shoulder and base curves; a label that runs onto a curve wrinkles. The circumference and overlap calculation for wrap labels is on Bottle wrap label. On a square jar the front panel carries brand and honey type, the back panel the mandatory information. For bleed and safe area see Dieline bleed and safe tolerances.

Lid label and tamper seal

A lid label, or a seal strip running over the lid down onto the jar, is not mandatory; most producers use it as a tamper-evidence cue and brand space. This part has its own size and its own cut line and is sized to the lid diameter.

Design hierarchy on a honey label

On the front panel, brand, honey type and net quantity must be readable; region and harvest year build trust but must be verifiable. The back panel holds the mandatory information, barcode and the warning the Communiqué requires. On clear labels, where the honey’s colour shows through, check text contrast separately before you approve the proof.

Front panel

The name of the food (for example "çiçek balı", or a supported name such as chestnut honey) and the net quantity must be in the same field of vision. The brand mark can be prominent but cannot replace the name of the food. If you use a regional name, check the Communiqué’s conditions and geographical indication rights.

Back panel and barcode

The back panel carries ingredient information where needed, the best-before area, operator details, batch number, the infant warning and the barcode. For the barcode quiet zone and background colour see Food box barcode and nutrition zone.

Clear labels

A clear label shows the honey’s colour but can make text unreadable on dark honey. A white underprint or an opaque information area can help; decide with a sample. Details: Clear vs opaque label.

Gift boxes and sets for honey

Honey jars can be sold boxed for holidays, corporate gifts and regional product sets. The box is designed from the jar size with the lid included, and glass needs an insert. When label and box share one brand language, recognition improves on the shelf and in e-commerce. Set boxes need dividers for more than one jar.

How to size the box is on Box design; when you need label and box together is on When to use label and box together.

Honey labels with Grapxo

In Grapxo you write the jar size, honey type, net quantity and mandatory texts into the brief; the vector engine produces a jar label set (body + lid) and, if needed, a back label as one consistent system. The jar itself is not designed; it only appears in the 3D preview to show the label. You supply the regulatory text; the engine places it. Print approval stays with the printer. Variant labels for other honey types and weights can come from the same system.

The output is a ZIP of layered vector files: cutter SVG + DXF, a print PDF and, if needed, a separate effects PDF for foil, spot UV or emboss; the cut line comes on its own layer. To ask for a label and gift box from one brief see One brief, multiple packaging outputs.

Grapxo, Canva and Pacdora for honey labels

Canva’s label templates give a quick start. Pacdora can show the label on product mockups. Grapxo produces a vector label and box surface from a brief, fitted to the jar and with room reserved for mandatory fields. Whatever the tool, the accuracy of Communiqué wording is the producer’s responsibility, and the final file must be approved on a printer’s proof.

Frequently asked questions

Is the infant warning mandatory on a honey label?

Article 13 of the Honey Communiqué requires the wording "1 yaşından küçük bebeklere bal yedirilmemelidir" (do not feed honey to infants under one year). Check the current text; this is not legal advice.

Does a honey label need a nutrition table?

It depends on general food labelling rules and their exemptions. Check the regulation.

Is there a difference between "çiçek balı" and "bal"?

The Communiqué names honey by source as "bal", "çiçek balı" (blossom) or "salgı balı" (honeydew). Your product decides which applies.

Is a lid label mandatory?

No; it is usually a tamper-evidence cue and brand space.

Does a clear label look good on a honey jar?

It shows the honey’s colour but can lower contrast; test legibility with a sample.

Does Grapxo write the regulatory text?

No. You provide the text; the engine places it on the label.
