Olive oil bottle label: what goes on it and how to design it

The two most-read lines on an olive oil label are the brand and the oil’s category; the difference between "natürel sızma" (extra virgin) and "riviera" is a quality decision for the buyer. For producers, small farm brands and cooperatives, this guide explains which wording may be used under which conditions in Turkey, how to measure the bottle, what to watch on dark glass and tins, and how to handle bilingual labels.

What information should an olive oil label carry?

An olive oil label carries general food label information (name of the food, net quantity, best-before date, storage conditions, operator details, batch number and so on) and the category name defined in Turkey’s Olive Oil and Pomace Oil Communiqué. The Communiqué allows wording such as "cold extracted" and taste-and-smell descriptors only under set conditions. Check the current text.

General food fields

The list of mandatory particulars is in Article 9 of the Food Labelling and Consumer Information Regulation; the name of the food and net quantity must be in the same field of vision, and the legibility rule (x-height of at least 1.2 mm) applies. For layout see Food label mandatory info fields, and for the barcode Food box barcode and nutrition zone.

Category names

Article 4 of the Communiqué classifies olive oils: natürel sızma zeytinyağı (extra virgin), natürel birinci zeytinyağı (virgin), rafine zeytinyağı (refined), riviera zeytinyağı (a blend of refined and virgin oils) and çeşnili zeytinyağı (flavoured); ham zeytinyağı (lampante) is not fit for direct consumption. Pomace oils are defined separately. These official names are used as the name of the food; which category applies is decided by analysis, not by design.

Wording with conditions

Article 14 of the Communiqué adds the following to the general labelling rules:

  • "Soğuk sıkım" (cold extracted): only for extra virgin or virgin oils obtained by percolation or centrifugation of the olive paste below 27 °C.
  • "İlk soğuk baskı" (first cold pressed): only for extra virgin and virgin oils from the first mechanical pressing of the olive paste with a hydraulic press below 27 °C.
  • Taste and smell descriptors: only for extra virgin and virgin oils, using the wording of the Analysis Methods Communiqué and only if assessed by that method.
  • Acidity: if stated, it must be given together with peroxide value, wax content and ultraviolet absorbance values, on the same face and in the same size.
  • Flavour or aroma: if added, its name goes before the product name in the same type size.
  • Geographical indication: may only be carried by extra virgin and virgin oils, under the relevant rules.
  • Pomace oil: may never be called "zeytinyağı" (olive oil).
  • Prepacked only: products sold directly to consumers may not be placed on the market without being prepacked.

The Communiqué also gives descriptive sentences each category may carry; copy them verbatim from the official text.

Regulatory note

The Communiqué (No. 2017/26) was published in the Official Gazette on 17.09.2017; check the current consolidated text for later amendments. Nutrition and health claims fall under a separate regulation. Export markets have their own rules. This section is for information only and is not legal advice.

Label size for an olive oil bottle

Take label size from the bottle’s flat body area; a label that runs onto the shoulder or base curve wrinkles. Square (dorica-type) bottles use separate front and back labels; round bottles use a wrap or a front-and-back pair. Neck labels and cap seals are separate parts. Taking dimensions from the supplier’s technical drawing is more reliable than measuring by hand.

Front, back and neck

The front label carries brand, category name and net quantity; the back label carries mandatory information, the barcode and any conditional wording. A neck label can hold short information such as harvest year or series name; region and harvest details must be verifiable. For wrap circumference and overlap see Bottle wrap label, and for bleed and safe area Dieline bleed and safe tolerances.

Dark glass, tins and gift boxes

On dark glass, label contrast matters; on tins, direct print or a wrap label is considered. For gift and export sets the bottle can be sold boxed; size the box with bottle and cap included and plan an insert. A printer’s sample decides material and print method. Tin and glass may need separate files.

On dark glass a light-ground or white-underprinted label can read better; see Clear vs opaque label. For gift box sizing see Box design, and for foil and embossing Hot foil, emboss and spot UV.

Bilingual TR and EN labels

Exporters often use a bilingual label or a country-specific back label. The front carries brand and category name; the back carries mandatory information by language. In Turkey the mandatory information is given in Turkish, and other languages may be added. Check the target country’s rules separately; Turkish rules alone may not be enough for an export market.

Under Article 18 of the Food Labelling Regulation, language blocks other than Turkish do not need to repeat every mandatory particular, but they must not mislead. In practice, separating the two languages with colour or a rule makes clear which block serves which market. Translation and target-market compliance remain the producer’s responsibility.

Olive oil labels with Grapxo

In Grapxo you write bottle size, category name, net quantity, languages and mandatory texts into the brief; the vector engine produces front and back labels and, if you like, a neck hang tag or small oval label as one consistent system. The bottle itself is not designed; it only appears in the 3D preview to show the label. Communiqué compliance and print approval remain your and your printer’s responsibility. Variants for other volumes, keeping the same layout logic, can come from the same brief.

The output is a ZIP of layered vector files: cutter SVG + DXF, a print PDF and, if needed, a separate effects PDF for foil, spot UV or emboss; the cut line comes on its own layer. To ask for a label and gift box from one brief see One brief, multiple packaging outputs.

Grapxo, Canva and Pacdora for olive oil labels

Canva’s label templates give quick ideas; Pacdora can show the label on a bottle mockup. Grapxo produces a vector label system from a brief, fitted to the bottle and with room reserved for mandatory fields. Whatever the tool, the accuracy of category names and wording is the producer’s responsibility, and the final file must be approved on a printer’s proof.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use "cold extracted" on any olive oil?

No. The Communiqué ties it to extra virgin and virgin oils and to set production conditions. Check the current text; this is not legal advice.

Is it mandatory to print acidity on the label?

The Communiqué says that if acidity is stated, other values must be given on the same face and in the same size. Check the current text for whether it is required.

One label or two on a square bottle?

Usually separate front and back labels: brand and category on the front, mandatory information on the back.

Which label reads well on dark glass?

A light-ground or white-underlayer label; test it with a sample.

Can a pomace oil label say "olive oil"?

No. Under the Communiqué, pomace oil may never be called olive oil.

Does Grapxo make bilingual labels?

If you give the languages and texts in the brief, it lays them out; translation and regulatory accuracy stay with you.
