Candle label and box design
For a candle brand the label does two jobs at once: it carries the scent name and the brand’s feel on the shelf, and it gives safety information in a readable way. The box protects the jar and carries the gift moment. This guide walks through the decisions in candle packaging in order, from jar size and the warning area to box type and making label and box speak the same language.
How do you design a candle label?
First measure the label surface of the jar or vessel: width and height for a flat face, circumference and overlap for a cylinder. Then plan space for the brand, scent name, net quantity and warnings. Choose a material that resists heat and oil, and prepare the file as vector artwork with the cut line on its own layer.
Front label and base label
Most candle brands use a two-part system. The front label carries the brand mark, scent name and any collection name; the base or back label holds warnings, manufacturer details, net quantity and batch number. The split keeps the front clean and leaves enough type size for the warnings. A single wrap label also works on a cylindrical jar; see Bottle wrap label for the sizing logic.
Material: heat, oil and transparency
A burning candle warms the jar, and fragrance oil can reach the surface; the label stock and adhesive must cope with that. Test the right material with a printer’s sample. A clear label shows the wax through the glass but can lower text contrast; see Clear vs opaque label to decide and CMYK, spot colour and white ink for white underprinting.
What warnings go on a scented candle label?
Scented candles usually carry safe-use warnings such as never leave a burning candle unattended and keep away from children and flammable materials. Depending on the fragrance oil, hazard pictograms and hazard statements may be needed. The fragrance supplier’s safety data sheet and the relevant rules decide which wording applies; the designer places that text, not writes it.
Planning the warning area
The size of the warning area is fixed only once the text and any pictogram are known. So ask your supplier for the safety data sheet and a label recommendation before design starts. The minimum pictogram size and its relation to label size are defined in the rules; take the value from the official text rather than guessing. Warnings must be readable, contrast with the background and sit away from the cut line.
Regulatory note
In Turkey, labelling of substances and mixtures classified as hazardous is governed by the Regulation on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (SEA), prepared in parallel with the EU CLP Regulation (1272/2008) and published in the Official Gazette on 11.12.2013 (No. 28848, repeat issue). Article 19 lists what the label carries: the supplier’s name, address and phone number, nominal quantity, product identifiers and, where applicable, hazard pictograms, a signal word, hazard and precautionary statements; the label is prepared in Turkish. In the EU the same subject is governed by CLP; the current consolidated version on EUR-Lex is dated 01.07.2026. How candles are treated under these rules, and the current Turkish text, must be checked separately. This section is for information only and is not legal advice.

Candle box design
A candle box protects the jar and strengthens the gift moment. Use a folding carton for a single candle, a box with dividers for a set, and a separate outer box for shipping. Size the box with jar and lid included; glass jars benefit from an insert. The box can also repeat scent and warnings.
Single candle, sets and shipping
A folding carton is the most common choice for a single candle; how to size it is explained on Box design. For sets of two or three scents, plan a separate cavity for each jar. When selling online, the product box and the shipping box do different jobs; Shipper vs unboxing box explains the split. Before trying a new scent series, use the Sample box brief checklist for a short sample run.
Finishes and surface
Hot foil and embossing are common on candle boxes to lift the scent name or logo. Finishes are marked on the dieline as their own layer and colour. Hot foil, emboss and spot UV compares when each one fits.
How do label and box stay consistent?
Label and box should share colour, typography and the scent-name hierarchy. If scent variants are separated by a colour code, recognition improves on the shelf and in e-commerce images. Defining label, box and, if needed, sleeve in one brief makes consistency easier; adding a new scent then means extending the system rather than starting over.
A practical method: pick one accent colour per scent and use it in the same place on label and box, while the brand mark, type family and warning block stay fixed across every series. The shelf looks orderly and new scents are quick to add. See When to use label and box together for when you need both, and One brief, multiple packaging outputs for asking several parts from one brief.
Candle labels and boxes with Grapxo
In Grapxo you write jar size, scent names, net quantity and warning texts into the brief. The vector engine produces the label (flat, wrap or round) and the box (for example a tuck-end or lid-and-base box) in one brand language. Warning accuracy and any pictogram remain your and your supplier’s responsibility; print approval stays with the printer. A new scent becomes a variant of the same system.
What goes into the brief?
- Jar type and size (flat face width and height, or cylinder circumference), height including the lid.
- Scent names and a preferred accent colour for each.
- Net quantity, manufacturer details and a batch number area.
- Warning texts from your supplier and a pictogram file if needed.
- Box type if you also want a box (inserts are cut by your printer).
The output is not an image but a ZIP of layered vector files: cutter SVG + DXF, a print PDF and a separate effects PDF; the cut line comes on its own layer. Before handing it over, check it against the Layered vector output checklist.
Grapxo, Canva and Pacdora for candle packaging
Canva’s label templates and editor give a quick start. Pacdora is strong at showing the jar and box on a 3D mockup. Grapxo takes size and warning areas from the brief and produces print-ready vector label and box surfaces. Whatever the tool, check separately that the warning area is large enough and that the file passes a printer’s proof.

Frequently asked questions
What material should a candle label be?
A label stock that resists heat and oil and sticks well to the jar. Choose it with a printer’s sample.
Do candle labels have to carry warnings?
Safe-use warnings are common practice; hazard statements may be needed depending on the fragrance. Check current rules and the supplier’s safety data sheet. This is not legal advice.
Do warnings go on the front label?
Usually on the base or back label, at a readable size and with good contrast.
Does a candle in a glass jar need a box?
For shipping and gifting, most brands use a box and an insert. On the shelf a label alone can be enough.
Do I need a separate design for every scent?
Usually not. You build one system; the scent name and accent colour change.
Does Grapxo write the warning texts?
No. You and your supplier provide the text; the engine places it.
